Israel Program

The year of study in Israel is an opportunity for you to become familiar not only with important texts and resources, but also with Israeli culture and society. You can tailor the academic program to your personal interests and goals, while maximizing your skills in spoken and written Hebrew.

You may study at any number of institutions, including The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Bet Midrash of the World Union for Progressive Judaism (for more detail, consult the Hebrew site), the Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies and the Conservative Yeshiva.

A co-curricular program gives you the opportunity learn about the forces shaping Israeli society today. Two primary units — Jewish Identity and Education, and Social Issues  — are built around a series of mifgashim or site visits that include dialogues, tours, films, lectures and personal encounters. The first unit focuses on liberal Jewish and secular organizations creating a new Israeli Judaism, as well as progressive and pluralistic Jewish education initiatives. In the second unit, you'll engage with a variety of social justice and human rights issues ranging from ethnic discrimination and economic justice to environmental protection and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

You also can take seminars at the Kibbutz Institute for Jewish Festivals and Holidays and attend the Jerusalem Reconstructionist Minyan—a monthly Shabbat morning minyan led by RRC students.
