Rabbi Amy Joy Small

Rabbi Amy Joy Small has served JRF Congregation Beth Hatikvah in Chatham, NJ, since 1997. Before joining Congregation Beth Hatikvah, she was dean of academic administration and director of the education program at RRC. She graduated from RRC in 1987 with a master of arts in Hebrew letters and ordination as a rabbi, and received a master of arts in education from Villanova University and a bachelor of science in education from Temple University, summa cum laude.

She has a long history of service to the board of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association and is the immediate past president of the RRA. She also chairs the Rabbinic Cabinet of Metrowest and has had leadership roles with the National United Jewish Communities Rabbinic Cabinet, Religions for Peace, the National Interreligious Leadership Delegation for Peace in the Middle East, and the National UJC. She is a founding member and past chairperson of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation Education Commission.

Small has served on committees of the Jewish Education Service of North America, on the editorial board for Machshavo—the Journal of the Chicago Board of Rabbis—and the national board of the Coalition for the Advancement of Jewish Education. She was president of Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Michigan and has organized and chaired conferences for CAJE (Delaware Valley Regional Educator Conference), JRF (Educators' Conference), and the RRA (national convention.)

Previously, Small served as Rabbi for Temple B'nai Shalom in Benton Harbor, MI, and B'nai Yisrael Reconstructionist Congregation in South Bend, IN. Prior to that, she was the education director for religious schools in Margate, NJ; Broomall, PA; and Vineland, NJ.
